Current schools are growing in population and in size. The large buildings spread out across a campus with playgrounds or football fields and parking lots that are yellow in the morning and afternoon with buses ready to take the students home. But the schoolhouse of old was simple. Most are familiar with the little red building that was situated in a pasture of grass and the bell tower atop of the roof that the students spotted on their walk to school. This analyzes and informs the daily function, architectural function, past importance and present importance of the one-room schoolhouse in America with a focus on Ohio.

3. The little red schoolhouse became a symbol despite often not being red. It became a symbol of local pride and community efforts to further society.
Barbara Bush talked about its importance because of the values associated with it especially in the midwest, in a note in America's Country Schools. Organizations like Country Schools Association of America started to help preservation and restoration of these schools. The Iowa Quarter depicts a one room schoolhouse. |
